Since the beginning of our quarantine, people have been baking

Since the beginning of our quarantine, people have been baking. Flour, yeast, and other baking supplies are often hard to come by. Thinking about this concept anthropologically (ie. the relationship between behaviour and culture), answer the following two questions in your essay-based response: 1) why are people (or possibly even you?) baking so much during this time (other than boredom)?, and; 2) how is this trend related to different aspects of culture?

Since the beginning of our quarantine, people have been baking

Choose one of the following three essay questions

Choice #1: Pandemic Baking!

1) why are people (or possibly even you?) baking so much during this time (other than boredom)?, and;

2) how is this trend related to different aspects of culture?

In your response, please use ONLY the following resources. Do not use anything else, as this will result in a grade deduction:
1)      The textbook, including the Nathalie Cooke article on recipe books
2)      Lectures
3)      The news articles and podcast listed above

Your response to the question that you select should be written in essay format. There should be a clear introduction with a thesis, body paragraphs (how many is up to you), and a brief conclusion. Your essay should be between 1200 and 1400 words, not including your References Cited page.  Note that all in-text citations ARE included in this word count. Please ensure that your proofread your paper before submitting it as marks are allocated for spelling, grammar, etc.

You cannot use slang or contractions (eg. don’t, won’t); treat this as a formal paper. Once you upload, log out of Avenue and then log back in to make sure it attached properly. Submissions of incorrect files will not be graded. Your response will be filtered through turnitin.com once it is uploaded to Avenue.

Choice #2:

Select TWO academic articles/scholarly sources (ie. a journal article, article in an edited volume) that discuss one example of a third gender in a particular society (eg. hijra, Two spirit, fa’afafine – remember that transgender (in our society) is NOT the same as third gender, so do not use this as an example). Using these articles, relevant information about gender/third gender from your text, and other course material, outline how and why this particular example of a third gender challenges notions of gender binarisms/dualities (if they exist in this society) and/or mainstream ideas about gender in this society (ie. the society you are exploring…eg. Indian gender norms if doing hijras)?

What does the existence of recognized third genders in societies such as the one you explore say about the concept of gender and how we (as anthropologists/anthropology students) understand this concept? Your response should be in essay format, between 1200 and 1400 words. You do NOT need a title page. You also do not need to put your name on your paper as we will see your identity once you upload to Avenue.

Please upload your response as a Word or PDF to the Avenue Drop Box by 11 p.m. June 12. Once you upload, log out of Avenue and then log back in to make sure it attached properly.

Choice 3: Neanderthals

In class, we discuss how, in 2018, archaeologists discovered that Neanderthals, and not humans, were likely responsible for pictographs discovered in Spain (refer to lecture on this), and see this article:

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/news/2018/02/neanderthals-cave-art-humans-evolution-science/

Do further scholarly (not popular articles, like online blogs, magazines, etc) research on this issue. Scholarly research includes articles by academics, like journal articles. Using ONE scholarly source (do not use more than one scholarly article – marks will be deducted if you do), class material, plus the National Geographic article listed above, discuss three reasons why this is an important finding, and discuss what it might highlight about Neanderthals and their culture.
