Please choose ONE of the questions listed below and answer it in a well-written, well-supported essay that is, at minimum, 1500 words. In your essay, you must take a position and argue your position or thesis on the question posed. Arguing a position means supporting your thesis by drawing on the assigned textbook and at least TWO of the primary sources assigned up to and including the week when the essay is due. Then citing what you’ve borrowed or used.
This essay is due October 4th, before 11 p.m. PST.
Submit your essay on this page by clicking on the “Submit” button at the top of this page. Be sure that the file you submit is one of the following file-types: pdf, doc, docx. If I can’t open your essay file, I cannot assess it and you will fail this assignment.
- Assess this statement in light of our assigned readings: “…the most important effect of the frontier has been in the promotion of equality and the recognition that all Americans share the same natural rights.” Do you agree given the period we’ve looked at so far, roughly 1860 to 1900? Fashion a thesis in which you take a position on this claim, then back all you write with the material assigned so far in our course. Include at least the significant use of two primary sources that were given in the modules so far.
- Consider this claim: “In the period from 1860 to 1910, class conflict was rare in the U.S. and lessened by the remarkable rise in the quality of life of the average citizen.” Do you agree in light of our assigned reading in the class? Take a clear stand in your thesis, announced in the first paragraph, and back all you say with historical examples — including the significant use of at least two primary sources assigned in our modules.
- Assess this claim: “The story of the U.S. in the period from 1848 to 1900 is the story of immigration and how immigrants affected the national infrastructure, the nature of city government, the relationship between the worker and the factory-owner, to name just a few areas.” Do you agree? Fashion a thesis in which you take a position on this claim, then back all you write with the material assigned so far in our course. Include at least the significant use of two primary sources that were given in the modules.
