First, must read Chapters 48 & 49 (pages 446 to 452). These two short selections by contemporary American philosopher Judith Jarvis Thomson address various forms the Trolley Problem.( see attachment)
Second,need to listen to the following NPR podcast (available for free): http://www.radiolab.org/story/driverless-dilemma/
assess the relationship of the classic philosophical conundrum of the trolley problem to this new technological puzzle. It should address some or all of the following questions in a meaningful way:
1.Explain the trolley problem, as you understand the thought experiment.
2.Explain in detail the theory of utilitarianism. How does the trolley problem relate to the theory of utilitarianism?
3.How do driverless cars present a unique version of the trolley problem?
4.Do driverless cars and the trolley problem reflect an updated version of a classic problem or a new and dangerous space for this problem as it relates to technology?
5.How do you think that technology may present new moral problems? How should we solve these kinds of problems?
