Graded Small Group Discussion Activity: Junk Food Example Study
Imagine you’re investigating the hypothesis from the last page:
Music Theatre students are less likely to eat junk food than Film & Television Students.
On your Small Group Discussion Board, post the answers to the following questions (if you forget how to post, see How to Participate in Small Group Discussions (technical details) :
1. What is the independent variable? (In the above hypothesis)
2. What is the dependent variable? (In the above hypothesis)
3. If you were going to conduct sociological research to test the above hypothesis, which of the following research methods would you use and why?
Surveys (structured interviews or questionnaires)
Participant observation
Qualitative interviews
Secondary analysis
Written documents and A/V materials
Unobtrusive measures
4. How would you operationalize the variable “likelihood of eating junk food” to test the above hypothesis? (What would be the operational definition?) How would you use that operational definition with the specific research method that you’re choosing?
N.B. Be as specific as possible and refer to course material wherever possible to justify your answers. If you like answers from previous posters in your group, you’re welcome to agree with them. However, you must build on these answers and add something valuable of your own for full marks. If you disagree with previous posters, suggest alternatives and explain why.
Remember that you are required to refer to at least one of the previous posts in the thread for full marks, unless you are the first to post.
This is not clearly stated in the abstract (it would be clearly stated in the article), but you can guess that it is something like: “Playing violent video games increases aggression in the player 24 hrs after the game is played”.
Firstly, What is the dependent variable?
Secondly, Aggression
Thirdly, What is the independent variable?
Fourthly, Playing violent vs. non-violent video games. (Rumination is a second independent variable).
Further, What is the operational definition of the dependent variable?
Additionally, Punishing an opponent in a competitive task with painful noise blasts in their headphones
Boy yelling playing a video game

Note! Why did the researchers use whether participants punished their opponents with painful noise blasts as a measure of aggression? Measuring aggression and violence in a research study is a tricky ethical and logistical issue. The researchers needed to provoke or allow aggression in some way (so that they could compare participants who played a violent video game to participants who played a non-violent video game) while at the same time making sure that no one could get hurt. Giving someone else painful noise blasts in their headphones can be seen as an aggressive act, but the likelihood of significant and long term physical or psychological damage to the one receiving the blasts is minimal.
