In “Mother Tongue” essay by Amy Tan the context is a misconception that people have regarding language and weather they use “perfect” or “broken” English. Tan’s family has a difficult time with English fluency.
Nevertheless, their speech shortcomings do not extend to reading as her mother can read and understands high-level English papers. Amy Tan expresses her work how parents have troubles mastering the English language. In addition, there are several tones throughout “Mother Tongue” but there is one overarching defensive tone. In fact, Tan uses the same tone in the beginning and at the end of her story. For example in the beginning of the essay she highlights how her mothers. “EXPRESSIVE COMMAND OF English Belies how much she actually understands” (Tan, 2006). And at the end she concludes with “Fortunately, I happen to be rebellious and enjoy the challenge of disproving assumptions made about me.” (Tan, 2006) Moreover, she shows the readers remorse and anger through the essay as she goes in telling her life story.

A closer analysis of the claim in the story that public who tend to judge people based on their communication ability is wrong when Tan brings out that her mother “Reads Forbs report. Listens to Wall Street Week, converses daily with her stockbroker.
Because of Amy’s structure I can understand clearly how knowledgeable is her mother. I can personally comprehend how hard it is to accomplish daily things when it is not your native language. Especially when it comes to a stock market. The entire essay breaks down how Tan’s defensive. Also, emotional, and informal tones suffest that her essay is written for herself. As well as for migrants, such as myself. By that are being ridiculed and mocked because of the lack language fluency. She also tries to target educated people and convince them of the reality. Also, to add how personal is her essay, she starts of in the beginning. “I am not a scholar of English or Literature. I cannot give you much more than personal opinions on the English Language and its variations in this country or others.
Now that you have discussed the author’s purpose for writing the selected reading, do you think the author’s writing is effective in achieving their purpose? What led you to this conclusion?
I think the authors essay is effective in convincing the readers the value of all people. No matter their language skill. Although she does not plainly state it. She conveys the message through breaking down how intelligent a person can be, despite language barriers. She brings attention that lack of fluency in the English language does not translate to literacy or intelligence. It is the same as “don’t judge a book by its cover” or “someone’s intelligence by his/her English! This is a metaphorical phrase that means one shouldn’t prejudge the worth or value of somone by his outward appearance alone or by her/his “broken” English.
