DEVELOPING ASSESSMENT ARCHITECTURE FOR A THREE-WEEK TEACHING AND LEARNING PERIOD
Title: Formative and summative assessment: Developing an assessment architecture to support teaching and learning, and maximise your impact. (50 marks)
Weighting: 50% of the semester mark
Rubric: Please find this in the resources section of Cadmus
Word count: 2500 – 3000 words
The goal of this assessment task is to help you plan your assessment strategies in a way that you might practically and realistically do in your first teaching practice (practicum).
The aim is to think carefully about how you would plan to assess your students, diagnostically, formatively and summatively, in such ways as to support and assist them in their learning, to maximise their outcomes and to measure your own impact on the students’ learning.
The aim is not to explore how you would teach this unit. You will be likely doing planning for teaching in your major teaching area subjects.
All these requirements will be covered in my lectures and in student tutorials, supported by reading, principally from the text book. We will be scaffolding your responses in the Cadmus program again and we will also use peer-assessment techniques again to assist in this.
Preparing your response: the context and task
1. In your major subject teaching area this semester, or last year perhaps, you have been exploring, at some stage, how to teach aspects of the WA K-10 Curriculum to lower secondary classes. Please imagine that your mentor teacher in your major subject area, on your first practicum next semester has asked you to select a particular topic or section of the WA Curriculum for ONE year group from 7 – 10, that would take you 3 (three) weeks, the length of your first practicum next semester. Note this down.
Some subject areas at school normally have three to five lessons a week so think in terms of a minimum of eight (8) lessons.
Also, If your subject area normally has fewer lessons, work to a minimum of six (6) lessons. Sometimes these subjects have double lessons of 100+ minutes – in which case you can do a minimum of three (3) lessons.
In summary, aim for 300 – 400 minutes of teaching.
2. Additionally, You will need to think about, and determine 3 – 4 (maximum) intended learning outcomes that you want the students to attain by the end of the three weeks. Note these down.
3. Furthermore, your mentor teacher has insisted that you have to conduct a summative assessment at the end of the practicum/teaching experience, and that you are to measure your impact on the students over the three weeks. Moreover, you will need to think about what sort of authentic, valid and reliable summative assessment task you would choose to do this. Also, Note your thoughts down.
4. Having selected the curriculum topic, the intended learning outcomes and the summative assessment task.
5. You will then need to (VERY BRIEFLY for this exercise) state the major teaching topics/content you will be doing. No more than 30 words for each week.
6. Finally, Having developed the summative assessment task, and the rubric and with a overview of the teaching. You can now start to plan the diagnostic. Also, formative assessment activities that would support your teaching. Finally, learning activities across the three-week period. Think about feedback – from you to the students and from them to you.
