Annotated Bibliography
● Create an annotated bibliography (NOT a working bibliography) for your chosen research question/ topic. This annotated bibliography must include at least six sources, one of which is a scholarly article.* See this web site for help: http://guides.library.cornell.edu/annotated bibliography
● Since this bibliography substitutes for a paper, I will be asking you to write more involved entries than you would normally for this kind of project. For each entry, you should write at least two short paragraphs.
o Paragraph 1: Write a brief summary of the source’s content. Paraphrase information or points that you consider most noteworthy or relevant to your interests
o Paragraph 2 (tack on an extra paragraph if necessary): Write a critical evaluation of the source. See http://guides.library.cornell.edu/critically_analyzing and examples on page 2.
When evaluating your sources consider these matters/questions:
▪ Evaluate the source’s authority and credibility. This might involve doing a little research on the author’s background or on the institution/ corporation who sponsored/published the information.
▪ Evaluate the source’s context. In which journal/ magazine/book is the information published? On which website did you find it? Who is the intended audience for this information?
▪ Evaluate the timeliness of the information: How current is the information? If it’s more than 3 years old, see if other studies/ research have been conducted/ published since then which might support or contradict it.
▪ Evaluate what parts of the source material might help you with you a future project and how they would inform your topic or support your argument.
Reflection on and Analysis of Research – 1 page
Write a short informal essay that considers the sources you summarized and evaluated for your Annotated Bibliography. See if you can map out any kind of relationships between them. Also, think about how you might or might not use these sources in future project. If possible, include answers to these questions in your reflection:
Firstly, Did you see differences and similarities in outlooks, conclusions, and or focal points in your sources?
Secondly, Did you notice a particular “need” for new data or studies? Gaps in research?
Thirdly, Did you see an opening for an argument or point that hasn’t been considered?
Fourthly, Did you notice any trends, terms, studies, authors, etc. which were mentioned repeatedly?
If you were to progress to the next stage of “writing a paper,” would you want to revisit or cite some sources and discard others? Why?
Finally, If you had time to do more research, what avenues would you explore?
