The Reverse Outline is a reading tool that allows us to look closely at each individual paragraph in order to gain a better understanding of the whole text. Here’s how it works: For each paragraph, you’ll describe what the author is doing, what the author is saying, and the key terms or words she uses to do and say these things. When you’re finished, you’ll have what resembles a blueprint of the essay that breaks down what it says and how it says it. Since this week we are not looking at traditional essays, your approach will be somewhat different. Instead of analyzing each individual paragraph, look instead at each slide (if it’s a presentation), each scene/significant moment (if it’s a video), or each document (if it’s a doctored collection of receipts).
