Chinese art and Culture

Students will pick a film from this list of historical movies and write a 500 word review. This review must be submitted as attachments or text through their prescribed canvas assignment links. First Review- 100 pts. hese films are available online for free. Email me if you have any problems locating the films. This should be planned in advance. Film Review Guidelines: The assignment consists of a 500 word review, that is broken down into three parts. One- Summarize the film. Two- Critique the film (whether you thought it was a good film or not). Three- How does the film fit in regarding material discussed in class and/or why might the film be relevant when discussing broader issues? These three sections don’t have to be 1/3 of the review- you can make them as long or short as you’d like, providing the end result is 500 words, and all three sections are adequately included. 2. There is a reference to a “Historical Film Questionnaire” in various files- please disregard this. It’s not relevant for this quarter. Film Review Rubric (point values are for the first film review, though the rubric applies to the second as well). 95-100 Excellent essay. Met all three requirements. Analysis of the film’s content relative to the course material. Very good job overall. Do this on future assignments. 89-94- Excellent essay. Met all three requirements. Analysis of the film’s content relative to the course material. A more-detailed essay would have yielded a higher grade, but nevertheless good job overall. Do this on future assignments. 85-88- The content is good, however the essay should reflect a greater amount of detailed analysis. Furthermore the essay doesn’t quite meet the length requirement. However, the content that is present is good. Next time write a more thorough essay, and you should receive full credit. 80-85- The content is good, however the essay should reflect a greater amount of thought and detailed analysis. Furthermore the essay doesn’t meet the length requirement. However, the content that is present is good. Next time write a more thorough essay, and you should receive full credit. 70-80: Absence of serious thought. Severely lacking in detail. Does not meet length requirement. Demonstrates low amount of effort in engaging with the film. 60-70: Very poor attempt. No serious effort was made to fulfill the requirements of the assignment. The vast majority of the people earn A grades on film reviews, due to following the basic requirements posted! Watching the films is supposed to be educational, but also enjoyable! This film chronicles the struggles of a young man and woman attempting to raise a family in communist China during the Cultural Revolution. Be careful- this film is very sad and has made students cry in the past. 2. The Blood of Yingzhou District (It can be found on both youtube and Netflix).
