Title: Analyse and reflect on how schools’ assessment practices can support children’s progress in Literacy
Guidance
1] While on placement in Week 11 you are expected to observe/make notes and collect information surrounding Literacy assessment in a class (reading and/or writing) and specifically for 2-3 focus children. At least one of these should have an additional need (EAL, SLCN, higher ability, BESD, etc.). If appropriate you can focus on teaching in other year groups, such as intervention groups etc.
Here are some suggestions although you may only be able to collect some of them (with permission):
• the school’s Literacy marking policy for your year group or key stage;
• Examples of your focus children’s marked work;
• Examples of teacher assessment records of Literacy for the whole class, as well as your focus children;
• Discussion with teacher about the role of summative assessment and collect copies of summative assessment records – SATS/optional SATs, end of unit/half-term/term assessments, reading age assessments, etc.
• Observational notes on use of different assessment approaches, e.g. oral feedback, marking & instant marking, target-setting, self/peer assessment, teacher moderation etc.
• Children’s responses to being assessed using interview/focus group methods.
2] The Rationale should include discussion on:
• Principles and purposes of summative and formative assessment in Literacy
• inclusive assessment practices for children with additional needs (focus on one additional need such as EAL, language difficulty etc.), including summative assessments;
• how different assessment approaches can support learning;
• other relevant areas of your choice
3] School information, extracts from your notes/observations and children’s work should be
placed in appendices. 3-4 appendix items are suitable.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
1. Devise and communicate approaches surrounding teaching diverse learners in English, based on current research and scholarship.
2. Develop critical understanding of using summative assessment in English.
3. Reflect analytically on your professional development in achieving good learning outcomes for children and know how to improve and sustain your performance.
